What is andropause?

Andropause is the gradual decline in testosterone levels that occurs in some men as they age, often accompanied by symptoms like low energy, mood changes, and reduced sexual function.

Andropause refers to a gradual decrease in testosterone production in men, typically beginning in the 30s and accelerating with age. Unlike menopause in women, which occurs relatively suddenly, andropause is a slow hormonal shift that may or may not produce noticeable symptoms.

Common signs include reduced energy and stamina, mood swings, decreased libido, difficulty with muscle maintenance, and changes in sleep quality. Some men experience all of these; others notice only one or two. The pace and severity vary widely from person to person.

Andropause differs from clinical hypogonadism, which is a medical condition where testosterone levels fall below the normal range for adult men and meet specific diagnostic thresholds. Hypogonadism is treated as a condition requiring clinical evaluation, while andropause is an informal term for the natural aging process. A man with andropause symptoms may or may not have clinical hypogonadism when tested by a doctor. Only a blood test can determine whether testosterone levels warrant medical attention.

Because andropause symptoms can mirror other health issues, medical evaluation is important before pursuing treatment. Florida testosterone replacement therapy providers can assess whether symptoms align with low testosterone and discuss options if treatment is appropriate.
